Write Twice As Fast

29 Aug

Start using this one tip and your writing speed will soar.  No experience necessary.

Does that sound too good to be true?

I just used this idea last week to publish a 743 word article that took me about an hour to write.  I did a final gloss and edit in about 30 minutes.

Total time = 1 hour and 30 minutes to write that article.

That’s pretty quick.

Now I don’t always write that fast, but I do think if you use this one idea I’ll share with you -- you can cut your own writing time in half.

Yes, in half.

What is this great piece of advice?

I’ll share it with you in a minute.  First, I want to share with you an important distinction between someone who is a top performer -- a game changer - someone is very productive versus someone who is not on their game at all.

Would you like to know the biggest difference?

The people who are top performers have clarity.  The more clear you are, the better you can focus.  The better you focus, the more power you gain.  Just remember this formula, clarity = power.

That is the difference.

Clarity is Key

The reason I believe coaches stumble with creating consistent content for their blog is because they lack clarity.

If you want to write great content for your blog then you must have clarity.  And if you want to write faster than you have in the past, you must have clarity.

So here’s my golden tip to create that clarity: anytime you start a new article, ALWAYS choose the title first.

Please re-read that.

Don’t bother writing a single word until you have a title you’re happy with.  Everything starts with that title.

When you have a clear title, writing becomes much easier.  That is the trick.

Choose the title first.  That is one of the most important things you can do to increase your writing speed…

  • Once you choose the title of your content, you will have clarity.
  • Once you choose the title of your content, you will have focus.
  • Once you choose the title of your content, you will have direction.

Clarity -- Focus -- Direction -- All if it is available to you.  You just need to make one small shift in your writing habit; and that is to start every article you write, by choosing your title before you’re ready to actually write it.

Yes, you heard me right.

I’ve been writing for about 4 years now {give or take} and this alone has had a big impact on my writing speed… and the more I play with this idea and implement it, the faster I write.

I guarantee that if you follow this one piece of advice, you will invest less time on writing and more time on producing great content.  Content that generates more traffic, new leads and helps you build your profile online.

It’s so simple and it works.

Getting Creative

Now, after you choose your title, here is a super second tip to help you write twice as fast.

Never write on the day you choose the title.

Yep, you heard me.

Never write on the day you choose the title.

I don’t know why this works, but it does.  I never write on the day that I choose the title.  Almost never.

The truth is that I’ll choose a title for a blog post first.  Then days and sometimes even weeks go by before I ever write a single word.  When I am ready to write it is always AFTER I choose the title of the blog post or email I want to send out.

There is this gestation period for creativity.

The trick -- I have found -- it to choose the title and let my ideas sit.  And the longer those ideas sit, the better quality articles I tend to write.  Give it a shot and let me know how it goes.

Makes sense Steve – never thought about allowing for the gestation time! Seems obvious now that you said it. Will try and report back.
